First, it's a working studio gallery. It features the kaleidoscopic imagery and fabric creations of Trina Stephenson and the fine art landscapes of award-winning artist Michael Chesley Johnson. Here's a little about the artists:
For her own work, Trina photographs the local landscape and then manipulates the images digitally into mandala-like forms. Often, the images include close-ups of subjects such as ferns, flowers and trees that she has chosen for color and contrast. Images are available as metal prints, or as traditional prints, both framed and unframed. Additionally, she may incorporate some of the images into fabric pieces such as art quilts. Visit Trina's blog: http://afabricator.blogspot.com
Michael is an award-winning, internationally-known painter and painting instructor who has operated Friar's Bay Studio Gallery on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, for ten years. The author of Through a Painter's Brush: A Year on Campobello Island and other books, his work includes oil and pastel paintings of local maritime scenery. (His books are available through Amazon at www.amazon.com/author/johnson.) Michael extends his popular "Plein Air Painting Maine " outdoor painting workshops to include the Lubec area and base at a few weeks at Artists Retreat Studios & Gallery. Second, it's an artists' retreat. We have found that people are more likely to buy from artists directly and studio galleries than from impersonal galleries. Artists can stay for a period of time so they can paint, write, compose or create from the inspiration of the local scenery. During their "residency," they can actively market their work while in residence (and perhaps beyond). The location is perfect since many tourists go by during the summer months and also the Summerkeys music program operates at that time. Also, traffic going to Campobello Island passes right by the studio doors..
By the way, it's an easy walk to a wonderful conservation area, Mowry Beach: http://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/mowry-beach
Suites are also available for non-artists, too!
Should you cancel your reservation for any reason, we will retain all deposits received, unless we are able to re-rent the space at the same rate for the same period of time.
